ALL ABOUT US
How it started
These past few years I took my coffee to a whole different level. My wife drinks, or more so needs, coffee every single day. I, on the other hand, have always liked coffee but would only drink it occasionally. That changed this year for some reason. Possibly because having a newborn that keeps you up all night makes you need caffeine. Or maybe another reason, who knows. But I was drinking much more coffee than I was used to.
I was not a fan of Keurig coffee, and could not make my way to one of the many wonderful local coffee shops in Sacramento every morning. So I got some better equipment, some fresh beans from local roasters, and started brewing better coffee. It was a journey trying a variety of beans from different roasters. And learning so much while doing it. I wanted to keep learning and take it even further though. So, I took the beans into my own hands and started roasting.
How we got here
The process of roasting coffee was fascinating to me from my first attempt. I started roasting on a basic popcorn popper. That's right, the same ol' little popcorn popper you might have used in the 90's or early 2000's to make popcorn at home. And just seeing how good coffee could be from that little machine was exciting. Shortly after I upgraded to an actual coffee roaster, although it was basically a fancy popcorn popper. And the coffee was even better with that.
My background is in engineering so I'm used to breaking things down to understand them and then figuring out how to improve them. And that's exactly what I wanted to do with the coffee roasting process. So, I upgraded to an even better machine that gave me more control, and also more sensors so I can understand what was happening even better. At that point I was roasting larger batches, but they were more for enjoyment rather than drinking. Well that led to an abundance of coffee in my kitchen, more than my wife and I could drink.
